Return to bowling

Getting from cleared to bowling a full spell in a match is where rehabilitation succeeds or quietly fails. The principle is simple and the discipline is hard: build one variable at a time.

  1. Loading and strength before any bowling, to the point where the tissue tolerates what is coming.
  2. Running, built to the run-up demand and beyond it.
  3. Run-throughs without a ball, full run-up, no delivery.
  4. Bowling off a short run, low intensity, low volume. Boring on purpose.
  5. Build volume at that intensity, across weeks not days.
  6. Build intensity while holding volume steady. Never both at once.
  7. Full run-up, match intensity, in training, in spells that look like match spells.
  8. Match spells, with a plan for the week after, because the response matters more than the day itself.

Two rules make the difference. Add one variable at a time. And judge each step by how the body responds over the following 24 to 48 hours, not by how it felt during.

A bowler returning from lumbar bone stress needs the slow version of this. More on fast bowling back pain.

When a return to bowling stalls: symptoms, gaps and pressure to speed up.
